The adult birthday problem is that dinner is the default and dinner is not an occasion. Everyone sits down, orders, talks to the two people either side of them, and goes home. Nobody remembers it.
Here are the things worth doing instead in Naperville, and how to run one for a group without becoming the event planner.
Paint free on your own birthday
Worth knowing first: at Naperville Art Studio the birthday guest paints free during their birthday week. Bring ID, book with at least one other person, and your project is on us.
That makes the maths on a birthday group unusual. The person being celebrated does not pay, and everyone else is $25 to book with that coming off whatever they choose to make.
Why a group activity beats a group dinner
At a table for eight you get three conversations and the birthday person can reach two of them. At a studio table everybody is standing, moving between colors, looking at each other’s work. The group stays one group.
It is also an hour, not three. Start at the studio and the evening is still ahead of you, which is why a lot of groups pour first and eat downtown afterwards.
What adults actually make
Nobody has to make the same thing. In one session a group might split across canvases, resin tumblers, charcuterie boards, a lazy susan and a couple of sculptures. Prices run from $25 for a patch hat to $105 for a rechargeable lamp.
The projects that suit birthday groups best are the ones people use afterwards: boards, trays and tumblers. They end up in kitchens rather than cupboards.
How to organise it without chasing people
- Book spots, not a table. One person can book for everyone in a single checkout, or share the link and let each guest book their own $25 spot.
- Do not pre-choose projects. Everyone picks on arrival, so late changes to the guest list cost you nothing.
- Tell us it is a birthday. We will seat the group together and sort the free birthday project.
- Book the weekend early. Friday and Saturday fill a week or two ahead.
Other Naperville birthday options worth a look
Depending on the group, a cooking class, a tasting room with a fixed flight, or a private restaurant room all work. The test is whether the group stays together and whether the birthday person actually gets to enjoy it rather than host it.
Common questions
Is the birthday guest really free?
Yes, during their birthday week, with ID, when booking two or more guests. Tell us when you book.
How big can a birthday group be?
Groups of 4 to 20 work well. For larger celebrations ask about a private studio buyout.
Can we bring cake or drinks?
Light snacks, cake, cupcakes and non-alcoholic drinks are welcome. We are an alcohol-free studio.
How long does it take?
About 60 minutes in the studio, plus 10 minutes at the start to choose projects.
When does everyone get their pieces?
About 10 days later, sealed and professionally finished. Guests from out of town can have theirs shipped.
Where can adults celebrate a birthday near Naperville?
Downtown Naperville covers restaurants and dessert, and there are activity venues along Ogden Avenue including our studio. We take birthday groups from across DuPage County, so Aurora, Wheaton, Lisle, Downers Grove and Plainfield are all an easy drive.
