How Long Does Resin Take to Cure? What to Expect

Resin takes about 10 days to fully cure and finish. It feels dry to the touch long before that, which is where most people go wrong, and it is the single question we get asked most in the studio.

Here is what is actually happening in those ten days, and why we keep your piece rather than sending it home wet.

How long does resin take to cure?

Epoxy resin goes through three stages. It gels within a few hours, becomes touch dry overnight, and reaches full hardness somewhere between 7 and 14 days depending on temperature, humidity and how thick the pour is. Until it reaches that last stage the surface dents, marks and picks up dust.

At our studio the working number is about 10 days from the day you pour. That covers curing, sealing and the final finishing pass.

Touch dry is not cured

This is the part that catches people out. A resin piece can feel completely solid after 24 hours and still be soft underneath. Set a mug on it at that point and you get a permanent ring. Stack two pieces and they bond to each other.

The chemistry is a reaction rather than an evaporation. Water-based paint dries because the water leaves. Resin hardens because two components react with each other, and that reaction keeps going long after the surface stops feeling wet.

What affects the cure time

  • Temperature. Warmer rooms cure faster. A cold garage can double the time or leave the surface tacky forever.
  • Thickness. A thin coat on a canvas cures faster than the layered pour on a piece of resin ocean art.
  • Humidity. High humidity during the first hours can cloud the surface or leave it sticky.
  • Mixing. Under-mixed or wrongly measured resin may never harden properly. This is the most common reason a home attempt fails.

Those four variables are why we cure pieces here in controlled conditions rather than handing them over at the end of your session.

Why we finish it for you

You do the interesting part, which is the pouring and the shaping. The ten days that follow involve a level surface, a dust-free space, a stable temperature and a finishing pass once it is hard. None of that is a good use of your kitchen table.

When you collect it, the surface is glass-like and properly hard. Boards and trays come back with a food-safe finish ready to serve on.

Looking after a finished resin piece

  • Hand wash boards, trays and tumblers. Do not put them in the dishwasher.
  • Keep resin away from direct heat. A hot pan on a board will mark it.
  • Wipe sculptures and wall pieces with a soft dry cloth.
  • Keep pieces out of long direct sunlight, which can yellow resin over years.

Treated reasonably, a resin piece lasts indefinitely. It is a hard, sealed, waterproof surface once it has cured.

Common questions

Can I take my resin piece home the same day?

No. It would arrive dented and dusty. Yours is ready in about 10 days and you can collect it at the studio or have it shipped anywhere in the continental US.

Is resin food safe?

Fully cured epoxy designed for food contact is. Our charcuterie boards and serving trays are finished with a food-safe resin surface. Uncured resin is not food safe, which is another reason the curing happens here.

How long does resin ocean art take to make?

About 60 minutes in the studio. You pour and shape the layers of water, sand and foam, and we handle the ten days after that.

Why is my resin still sticky?

Almost always an incorrect ratio, incomplete mixing, or a cold room. Sticky resin does not fix itself with more time. It has to be removed and recoated.

How much does a resin project cost?

From $45 for a tumbler to $105 for a rechargeable lamp. Ocean art is $85, charcuterie boards $75 and serving trays $85. One price covers the session, materials, guidance and the finish.
